Thank you, Shören Heather, for both Kokyo and Dogen in his gem of a teaching! A delight with its directness, droll glints of humour, and celebration of paradox's tricky tangles of truth.
As Kokyo writes so memorably, Dogen Zenji's Chinese character for all that 'aspiration' connotes is lovely too: 志 (zhì). For it ' "is made up of the radical for “earth” or “ground” over “heart” or “mind.” He goes on, "So it’s like a grounded heart, a heart that’s just completely resting in the earth, supported by the earth; like when the Buddha, on the night of his awakening, reached down and touched the earth. This is so helpful. Thank you.
Thank you Kokyo. Dogen is always right with this. Yet it is so hard for me to tell students there is nothing to gain.
